Chennai: A six wicket haul by off spinner R Ashwin, helped India bowl out England for 178 runs in their second innings on the fourth day of the first cricket test here today.
Earlier, England bowled out India for 337 and gained a first innings lead of 241 runs.
However, they chose to bat second and in the process lost wickets at regular interval and were all out in 46.3 overs, setting India a target of 420 runs in a maximum of 107 overs, including 17 overs today, on a pitch that offered good purchase for the spinners, who extracted turn and bounce.
First innings double centurion and Skipper Joe Root top scored with 40 (32 balls, 7x4).
For India Ashwin claimed six for 61, his 28th five wicket haul in his 75th match, while Shahbaz Nadeem claimed two wickets. Fast bowlers Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah picked a wicket each. (UNI)
