IND vs ENG, 3rd Test: Ravindra Jadeja's lone battle falls short as England seal victory

London: England edged out India by 22 runs in a pulsating third Test at Lord's, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Shoaib Bashir's decisive dismissal of Mohammed Siraj late in the final session sealed the win for the hosts after a tense final day that saw Ravindra Jadeja fight valiantly with the bat.

Set a target of 193, India were bowled out for 170 in 74.5 overs. Siraj’s dismissal, bowled through the gate by a sharply turning delivery from Bashir, triggered wild celebrations from the England camp and broke Indian hearts.

The standout performances in the match came from Joe Root and KL Rahul, who struck sublime centuries in the first innings for their respective sides. Root’s fluent 104 anchored England’s innings, while Rahul’s composed 100 kept India on par. England’s 387 was also boosted by useful fifties from Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (56), who chipped in with crucial lower-order runs.

India had looked set for a first-innings lead, but Rishabh Pant’s needless run-out for 74 turned the tide. He and Jadeja had added stability with their fifties, but once Pant fell, the innings lost steam and India were bowled out for 387 — identical to England’s score.

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s standout bowler, claiming a five-wicket haul in the first innings and adding two more in the second. For England, Chris Woakes led the bowling effort with 3 for 84 in the first innings. In the second, it was Archer and Stokes who did the damage with three wickets apiece before Bashir delivered the final blow.

On the final day, India resumed at 58 for 4 and slumped to 112 for 8 by lunch, with Archer and Stokes scything through the middle order. Washington Sundar (0) and Pant (9) were removed in quick succession, while Rahul departed after a successful review for LBW off Stokes.

Jadeja stood firm amid the collapse, reaching a gritty unbeaten 56 by tea. He brought up his fifty with a top-edged slash off Stokes and had earlier struck a six off Woakes and a stylish flick for four off Stokes. But he ran out of partners as Bumrah, who contributed 5, was dismissed by a short ball and Siraj eventually fell to Bashir’s decisive delivery.

India’s effort was also buoyed by moments of fortune — a few leg byes and misfields — but ultimately fell short. Jadeja's stoic presence raised hopes in the Indian camp, yet it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.

The series now moves to Old Trafford, where India will aim to level the score.

Brief Scores:

England 387 & 192; India: 387 & 170
Result: England won by 22 runs
