Bengaluru: New Zealand crushed India by 8 wickets, securing their first Test victory on Indian soil in 36 years in the first Test of the current series at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday.

The victory not only puts New Zealand ahead in the three-Test series but also marks a significant achievement, as it’s come against a side that’s leading the WTC charts.

The first day of the match was washed out due to rain, but New Zealand capitalised on helpful conditions on Day 2, bundling India out for a shameful 46. India tried to stage a comeback in their second innings, posting462, led by Sarfaraz Khan’s 150 and Rishabh Pant’s blistering 99. However, the last seven Indian wickets fell within a space of only 54 runs, and New Zealand were left a comparatively easy victory target of 107.

New Zealand showcased their own tenacity throughout the game. Rachin Ravindra's first-innings century (134) anchored the tourists to a commanding 402.

On the final day, Ravindra again stood tall, guiding his side to victory with an unbeaten 39. Will Young also played a key role, scoring 48 not in a calm and composed chase.

India’s bowling unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah, fought to defend the low target, but it proved futile.

Bumrah struck in the very first over, dismissing New Zealand captain Tom Latham leg before for a duck. He later removed Devon Conway, who was trapped leg before on review, after a gritty 17.
