Jason Roy gets eleventh hour entry in IPL 2021, replaces Mitchell Marsh
, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 (22:16 IST)
New Delhi: Good things come to those who wait, the adage fits well for England's south African origin opener Jason Roy who was disappointed after being unsold in the Bidding of cash-rich IPL 2021 last month.
It was a setback for the right-handed opener whose half-century knock cemented England's berth for the 2019 World cup final. Before the bidding, speculations were rife that the franchise would be shelling out a whopping amount for Roy whose stature is no less than the mighty David Malan and Glenn Maxwell.

However, the story turned out to be altogether different and he was sidelined by the franchises. That's not all his name was missing in the list of the second round of bidding. He was unable to digest this humiliation which also reflected in his tweet. He took to the microblogging site and wrote- "Massive shame not to be involved in the @IPL this year but wanted to congratulate all the lads that did get picked up. Especially some of the high rollers. Going to be good to watch"

However, he doesn't need to watch the IPL on television as Jason Roy will be a part of the action in IPL 2021 and sitting in the dugout of orange army. Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday roped in England opener Jason Roy as the replacement for Mitchell Marsh for the IPL 2021, beginning April 9 after the Australian all-rounder made himself unavailable due to personal reasons.

'Sunrisers Hyderabad have signed up England batsman Jason Roy as replacement for Mitchell Marsh, who has made himself unavailable for the entire season owing to personal reasons,' an official statement from IPL said.

Marsh, who made his IPL debut in 2010, has played a total of 21 games. His replacement Roy made his IPL debut in 2017 playing for Gujarat Lions and later featured for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the 2018 edition.

In his 8-match IPL career, Jason Roy has scored 179 runs at an average of over 29 and strike-rate of 133.58 so far. SRH have acquired Roy at his base price of Rs 2 crore. He went unsold in the IPL 2021 auction in February this year.

He had a decent outing in the recent T20Is against India, scoring 144 runs from 5 matches before hitting 46, 55 and 14 in the 3 ODIs.SRH will start their IPL 2021 campaign against two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on April 11.
