Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday decided to step down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings and Ravindra Jadeja will lead the team in this season of the Indian Premier League. The development comes just two days before CSK open their campaign against KKR in Mumbai in the season opener at Wankhede Stadium.
In the official statement, the yellow jersey team said, “MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team.”
“Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond,” it added.
Just few hours earlier, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had opined that Ravindra Jadeja is ready to take over the mantle from MS Dhoni, if the team management decides to give the senior statesman a break during the event.
