Chattogram: Mushfiqur Rahim on Wednesday became the first Bangladeshi batsman to reach 5,000 Test runs with his unconquered knock of 85 to help the home team reduce the first-innings deficit to 12 runs at lunch on Day 4 of the series-opener against Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh reached 385-3 in reply to Sri Lanka's 397, riding high on an unbroken partnership of 165-run along with Litton Das, who was not out on 88.

When the play resumed, Mushfiqur needed 15 runs to get past the 5000-run milestone . He guided the ball to fine leg for two runs off Asitha Fernando in his 81st Test match.

The 35-year-old Mushfiqur, who made his test debut in 2005 against England at Lord's, scored mere three boundaries in his 222-ball innings.

Aggressive Liton, stroked 10 boundaries from the 188 deliveries he faced.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal was too within reach of the 5,000 Test milestone in this innings, but had to retire hurt on 133, 19 runs short because of muscle cramp. (UNI)
