Chennai: In a heart rending incident, tragedy struck a newly married couple from Kerala who relocated to Chennai in a bid to start a new life, when they over run over by an EMU train while walking near the railway track on Wednesday night.
The couple--a pregnant woman and her husband--were run over by an EMU train at the Guduvancherry railway station near here last night.
Police said, the lovelorn couple, who had married against their families wishes, left Kerala and came to Chennai on Tuesday to start a new life in the city.
The deceased couple were identified as as Mohammed Sherif (36), a car driver, and his wife Aishwarya (28), of Kozhikode, who was working as a school teacher.
The duo, who were in love for the past few years, got married a few months ago as their families did not accept their relationship and strongly opposed it.
Aishwarya was four months pregnant when they decided to relocate to Chennai.
After arriving in the city on Tuesday, they boarded an EMU to Guduvancheri to visit one of their friends last evening.
Their friend received them at the Guduvancherry Railway Station and they were walking near the railway track when a Beach-Chengalpattu EMU train hit the couple at around 9.30 pm.
While Sherif died on the spot, Aishwarya, who suffered grievous injuries, was rushed to the private hospital in Potheri where she succumbed past midnight.
Tambaram Railway police sent their bodies to the Chromepet Government Hospital for post mortem.
