Bengaluru: India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), shocking fans and cricket followers across the country. Known for his match-winning performances with Chennai Super Kings and his strategic acumen on the field, Ashwin’s departure marks the end of an era in IPL cricket.

Ashwin made the announcement through a heartfelt tweet, saying, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me.”

The 37-year-old had recently been linked to a potential trade to another IPL franchise ahead of the 2025 season. However, his sudden announcement has ended all speculation and confirmed that he will not feature in the league this year or in the near future.

Ashwin had earlier retired from international cricket after the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, following limited opportunities in the playing eleven during the series. His IPL retirement follows the same pattern, signaling a shift from domestic and international Indian cricket to participation in overseas T20 leagues.

According to BCCI regulations, Indian players must retire from international cricket and the IPL before taking part in foreign league tournaments. Ashwin’s decision opens the door for him to explore leagues in England, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, and other countries, allowing him to continue his cricketing journey on a global stage.

There had been speculation that Ashwin could return to Rajasthan Royals in the 2026 IPL auction, but his announcement has put an end to such discussions. Reflecting on his IPL career, Ashwin expressed gratitude towards all franchises he has represented, the IPL, and the BCCI for the memories and opportunities.

With his IPL career concluded, Ashwin now looks forward to exploring new challenges in international T20 leagues while leaving behind a rich legacy in Indian cricket as one of the country’s finest spinners.
