Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has suffered a serious setback after his injury during the third ODI against Australia turned out to be far more severe than initially expected. According to reports, Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to internal bleeding.

The incident occurred during the third ODI match in Sydney, where Iyer took a spectacular catch to dismiss Australian batter Alex Carey. He sprinted backward from point to complete the catch but ended up injuring his left rib in the process.

Recognizing the seriousness of the injury, the team doctor and physio immediately rushed him to the hospital, where medical tests confirmed internal bleeding. As per PTI sources, Iyer has been in the ICU for the past two days, and doctors have described his condition as stable but critical earlier. Sources revealed that if he hadn’t been taken to the hospital in time, the situation could have turned life-threatening.

A source close to the team said, “He will remain under observation for 2 to 7 days, depending on how his body responds to treatment. Preventing infection is crucial at this stage.”

BCCI Reacts Swiftly

The BCCI medical team acted promptly to ensure Iyer received the best possible care. A team official said, “The team doctor and physio took no risks. His condition is currently stable, but the injury was indeed serious and could have been far more dangerous.”

Initially, doctors expected Iyer to be out of action for about three weeks, but the latest medical updates suggest his recovery period could be significantly longer. He is now likely to miss the upcoming ODI series against South Africa next month.

The 31-year-old cricketer will remain hospitalized in Sydney for at least a week before being allowed to return to India. He is not part of the T20 series against Australia starting October 29.
