Shubman Gill Admitted to ICU After Neck Injury, Ruled Out of First Test vs South Africa

Team India has suffered a major setback in the first Test against South Africa at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. Captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the match due to a serious neck spasm. He was taken to the hospital for detailed examination, where he remains under medical supervision. The BCCI has confirmed that Gill will not take further part in the ongoing Test.

Sources told NDTV that Gill has been kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from the beginning, but only as a precautionary measure.

Gill Forced to Leave the Field in Pain

On Day 2, while batting, Gill suddenly grabbed his neck in pain. Moments earlier, he had played an excellent sweep shot off Simon Harmer, but immediately after completing the stroke, he was visibly distressed. The team physio rushed to the field and provided initial treatment, but with no improvement, Gill had to walk back to the dressing room. He retired hurt after facing only three balls.

BCCI Issues Official Update

Ahead of Day 3, the BCCI released an official statement confirming Gill’s neck injury and his shift to the hospital for further scans. The board added that Gill remains under the care of doctors and will not continue in this Test. His absence is a major blow to India, impacting both batting and leadership.
