Steve Smith injured, leaves field on Day 3 of WTC Final

Australia's star batsman Steve Smith was forced off the field on the third day of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord's on Friday, after sustaining a finger injury while fielding in the slips.The incident occurred in the second session when South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma edged a delivery from Mitchell Starc towards the cordon. Positioned close in with a helmet on, Smith attempted a sharp catch but grassed the chance with Bavuma on just two. In the process, he appeared to injure a finger on his right hand and immediately walked off the field in discomfort.

Cricket Australia later confirmed that Smith was being assessed in the dressing room and would likely undergo scans. "Smith currently being assessed in the dressing room. Likely to go for scans," read a brief statement from the team management.The dropped catch came at a critical juncture, with South Africa seeking to crossover 288 runs target. Aiden Markram continued to lead the Proteas' objective.

Smith’s injury is a cause for concern for the Australian camp, with the WTC title on the line and the Ashes series on the horizon. Team officials are expected to provide a further update on his condition following the medical assessment.Australia, who had earlier gained a slender first-innings lead, now face an uphill task as South Africa aim to chase down the target.
