Positioned close in with a helmet on, Smith attempted a sharp catch but grassed the chance with Bavuma on just two. In the process, he appeared to injure a finger on his right hand and immediately walked off the field in discomfort.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that Smith was being assessed in the dressing room and would likely undergo scans. "Smith currently being assessed in the dressing room. Likely to go for scans," read a brief statement from the team management.The dropped catch came at a critical juncture, with South Africa seeking to crossover 288 runs target. Aiden Markram continued to lead the Proteas' objective.
