Tokyo: Despite winning two of their three matches, the Indian badminton pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty managed only the third position in the group stage, thereby failing to qualify for the men's doubles quarterfinals at the Tokyo Olympics here on Tuesday.

The Indian pair had to win their final match against Great Britain’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy while hoping that the Chinese Taipei pair will lose to Indonesia in order to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The top three teams in the group won two matches each, but only the top two teams could advance to the quarter-finals which was decided based on the number of games won and lost.

Indonesia topped the group with a game difference of +3 ahead of Chinese Taipei which had a game difference of +2. The Indians could manage a game difference of +1 leading to the exit of the Indian pair despite their heroics. (UNI)
