New Delhi: Team India Coach Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday lauded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its initiative to honour the armed forces, terming the gesture "unbelievable" and a reflection of national unity.

"I’ve often been critical of the BCCI on many matters, but this initiative is truly commendable," Gambhir told reporters here. "Anything done to recognise the armed forces deserves our full support."

He said the BCCI's decision carried a powerful message and reminded the nation to collectively salute the armed forces for their "unconditional service."

"Our soldiers serve, protect, and sacrifice for us without expecting anything in return," Gambhir noted, adding that the move deserves widespread appreciation not just for the cricketing body, but more importantly for the brave men and women in uniform.

"This is a moment when the entire nation stands as one. The BCCI's gesture sends a strong message of unity and respect. We must all salute our armed forces who have always stood by the country, selflessly," he said.

Gambhir's remarks come in the backdrop of the BCCI dedicating the IPL 2025 closing ceremony to the armed forces, following the recent Operation Sindoor carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

The tribute will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3 and will feature a 45-minute ceremony involving performances by military bands and cultural acts honouring the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Top military officials, including the service chiefs, have been invited to attend the finale. The BCCI has stated that this initiative is aimed at highlighting the nation’s gratitude for the selfless service and bravery of the armed forces.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, while confirming the plans, said that while cricket unites the country, the sacrifices made by the armed forces ensure that such unity and celebration are even possible. "There is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security," he said.

The grand finale of IPL 2025 is expected to blend the excitement of cricket with a solemn and respectful tribute, turning the spotlight onto the real heroes of the nation — the men and women in uniform.
