Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke on phone with the Indian women’s hockey team after they lost to Rio 2016 gold medallists Great Britain by a narrow 3-4 margin in a thrilling bronze medal match.

“You all played very well. Though your four-five years of hard work couldn’t be converted to a medal, you hard work and sweat have become an inspiration to crores of daughters of the country. I congratulate all the players and the coach,” Modi told the team.

When he heard them sobbing, he said, “Stop crying. I can hear that. The country is proud of you, don't be disheartened. After so many decades, hockey, which is India's identity, is again getting prominence for your hardwork," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister even inquired about the injury of Navneet Kaur, who had to get four stitches near her eye.
