Manchester:Stuart Broad's two wickets in successive overs left West Indies reeling at 10/2 in their second-innings against England at Stumps on Day 3 of the third and last Test match at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Broad continued his starring role in the match, removing both John Campbell and nightwatchman Kemar Roach in the six overs of play that were possible before stumps. Shai Hope and Kraigg Brathwaite managed to deny him any further success, leaving the seamer on 499 Test wickets overnight.
At the end of the day's play, Brathwaite (2) and Hope (4) were unbeaten at the crease as the Caribbean side still need 389 runs to win.Earlier, England declared their 2nd innings at 226 for 2, setting West Indies a huge target of 399 runs for the Caribbean side to win the match.
Starting the second innings with lead of 172, Rory Burns (90 runs) and Dom Sibley (56) scratched around, gradually building their partnership. They took the score past 100, giving England their first hundred opening partnership in a home Test since Alastair Cook and Alex Hales put on 126 against Pakistan in August 2016.
Both batsmen brought up their half-centuries before Holder finally made the breakthrough, dismissing Sibley.
Root's arrival at the crease brought an increase in the tempo as he prompted Burns to also begin playing with a little more extravagance. The England captain played expansively on his way to 68* from only 56 balls as the pair added 112 runs in just 17.1 overs. Burns was the man to fall, top-edging a sweep shot off Roston Chase to be caught for 90, prompting the declaration on 226/2 and setting Windies 399 to win.
In the morning session, resuming at Saturday's score of 137 for six in their first-innings, West Indies were bundled out cheaply for 197 runs in their first-innings.Skipper Jason Holder (46) and wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich (37) were the top scorers for the visitors.(UNI)
