“Would get involved in bigger things”: Sourav Ganguly breaks silence over BCCI exit

Kolkata: Amid reports that he would be replaced by 1983 World Cup winning team member Roger Binni as Indian cricket board chief, Sourav Ganguly said there is now a fresh energy in Indian cricket because of the good work done during his tenure as BCCI president.

"We organised the IPL, that too in another country, when the Covid pandemic was raging. Our women won the silver in the Commonwealth Games, though they had a golden opportunity to finish as champions," said Ganguly.

Ganguly, who is likely to make way for Binni at the October 18 Annual General Meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in Mumbai, asserted that he would get involved in bigger things after his present term ends.

Speaking at a promotional event here, the former Indian team captain termed his playing days the best part of his life so far.

"Playing the game is very tough. As an administrator you can get a lot of time. But as a cricketer, you won't get a second chance if you get out," he said.

However, he hastened to add that an administrator can bring in a lot of changes.

"You have seen how cricket has changed. A lot of good work has been done in Indian cricket over the past three years (when he was at the helm). There is now a fresh positive energy in Indian cricket," he said.

Ganguly asserted that he would get involved in other things.

"All things come to an end. One has to start from zero. One cannot achieve anything at the drop of a hat. Narendra Modi hasn't become prime minister overnight. Sachin (Tendulkar's) success came after years of hard work. So long I was an administrator. Now I will do something else... may be bigger things".

Ganguly hoped that India would do well in the upcoming t20 World Cup.

"The Rohit Sharma led side is pretty good they are touring Australia side by side their preparation for the big event. I hope they will do well."

Looking back at his playing career, Ganguly said he is happy for having left a lasting impact on Indian cricket with his stint as the captain of the senior national team.
