India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal termed his Test debut century in England as part of a “new era” in Indian cricket and credited the team environment, leadership, and preparation under Gautam Gambhir for the memorable performance at Headingley.Jaiswal, who struck a debut hundred in England on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, said it was a special moment to begin the tour on such a note and praised the camaraderie with captain Shubman Gill, who also scored a century.
The moment carried emotional weight beyond individual statistics — a young debutant and a young captain both notching centuries in challenging English conditions. The twin milestones have come to symbolize a passing of the torch in Indian cricket, and hint strongly at a bold new future. “We are trying to give our best, work hard and perform for the country. The atmosphere in the team has been fantastic. We’ve been given the freedom to play our natural game and that has really helped,” Jaiswal said in a post-match interaction.
On his preparation, Jaiswal revealed the India A stint in Bengaluru under Gautam Gambhir’s guidance was key. “We had some intense sessions and a lot of technical discussions. Gautam sir was very supportive. I enjoyed preparing hard and that gave me confidence coming here,” he said.
Despite experiencing cramps during his innings, Jaiswal said he remained focused on handling the situation and adapting to the bowling challenges. “There were phases where I had to slow down, assess field placements, and play accordingly. It was important to bat for the team’s needs,” he added.
Reflecting on scoring hundreds in both Australia and England, the left-hander said: “Wherever I go and whenever I play, my goal is always to make big scores. I enjoy scoring hundreds, and I love that feeling. Of course, some moments are extra special. A debut hundred in England, especially when our captain Shubman also scored a hundred — that makes it even more memorable. The first of anything is always special, and to do it on such a stage for Indian cricket is something I will always remember.”
He also praised his partnership with Gill, highlighting clear communication and intent to dominate sessions. “We wanted to play session by session, punish loose balls and keep the scoreboard moving. We really enjoyed batting together,” Jaiswal noted.
Addressing the critics of IPL as a Test prep platform, Jaiswal said, “I just tried to give myself the best chance. I focused on my game and mindset. The preparation mattered more than the format.”On being part of a young Indian side, Jaiswal said the team had been fully backed by the management. “We’ve been told to enjoy the game and play freely. That confidence from the dressing room helps a lot.”Looking ahead, Jaiswal said he aims to carry on the momentum. “It’s been a great start, and I hope we can continue this and take it as far as we can,” he said.
