Abu Dhabi: Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah became the fastest bowler to take 200 wickets in the history of world cricket, breaking Australian leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett's 82-year-old record.
He achieved the milestone trapping the nightwatchman William Somerville in the ongoing third Test in Abu Dhabi against New Zealand.Shah has broken Grimmett's record by achieving the feat in 33 Tests. Grimmett took his 200th wicket in his 36th Test in 1936.
Earlier, India's off-spinner R Ashwin also had a similar chance to create the record in 2016. But the bowler missed the opportunity by one Test, as he reached the landmark in his 37th Test.
Following Grimmett and Ashwin, the bowling greats like Australia's Dennis Lillee (38 Tests), Pakistan's Waqar Younis (38 Tests) and South Africa's Dale Steyn (39 Tests) held the top five spots in the list of fastest to 200 wickets before Yasir Shah's achievement.(UNI)
