A Chennai Metro train came to an unexpected halt between two underground stations on Tuesday morning, leaving around 20 passengers stranded before they were asked to walk through the tunnel to safety.

Videos shot by commuters show confused passengers standing near the handrail, unsure of the cause of the delay. Several passengers said they felt “trapped” until an announcement was finally made.

After nearly ten minutes, metro staff instructed them to disembark and walk nearly 500 metres to the High Court station, the nearest exit point. Another clip shows passengers forming a single line and carefully navigating the tunnel as personnel guided them forward.

The incident occurred between the High Court and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central Metro Station, causing anxiety among morning commuters. Officials later rescued all passengers, and services resumed from 6.20 am.

In a statement, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said:

“Due to a technical issue, the Metro train halted between the High Court station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central Metro Station. Immediate evacuation was conducted, and the train was withdrawn from service.”

Normal operations resumed at 6.20 am, CMRL said, issuing an apology for the inconvenience caused.

Metro services on the Blue Line (Airport–Wimco Nagar Depot) and the Green Line (Central Metro–St. Thomas Mount) later returned to normal schedules, the agency confirmed in a post on X.
