According to a report by the Greek City Times, the woman, a mother of two and married for over 12 years, turned to ChatGPT for a modern take on tasseography, the ancient practice of reading coffee grounds to predict the future. She reportedly uploaded photos of the leftover patterns in her and her husband's coffee cups, asking ChatGPT to interpret them.
What she received, however, was not a vague interpretation—but a life-changing accusation. The chatbot reportedly told her that her husband's coffee cup revealed a relationship with a "mysterious younger woman with the initial 'E'," while hers signaled betrayal and a looming threat to her family.
Shocked by the AI-generated reading, the woman allegedly confronted her husband and asked him to leave. Within days, he received a call from her lawyer.
“I laughed it off as nonsense,” the husband said during an appearance on a local Greek television program. “But she took it seriously. She told our kids we were getting divorced—and then came the legal notice.”
The husband claimed this was not the first time his wife had acted on mystical beliefs. “A few years ago, she visited an astrologer and held onto their predictions for almost a year before realizing none of it came true,” he recalled.
His legal counsel emphasized that a chatbot’s “coffee reading” carries no legal weight. “A chatbot's interpretation of coffee grounds is not recognized as valid proof of adultery in any court,” the lawyer said. “He is innocent until proven otherwise.”
Despite the controversy, the wife has reportedly refused a mutual separation and is proceeding with formal divorce filings.
