Minor girl sets herself ablaze, rapist uncle held under POSCO

Chennai: In a shocking incident, a 15-year-old girl, who was raped by her uncle, committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at Koyambedu area in the city last night, even as the rapist, who was working as Correspondent in a private school, was detained under the POSCO act by the police. Police sources said the girl, a tenth standard students, has left behind a suicide note in which, she charged her uncle of raping her.
 

In the suicide note, she said her uncle Saravanan repeatedly harassed her sexually, forcing her to take the extreme step. It was alleged that the accused raped the girl in September last year after he spiked the girl's drink. He recorded it in his mobile camera and used the footage to threaten and repeatedly harass the girl.

The Koyambedu Police have arrested Saravanan (35), who was Correspondent of a private school. The arrest followed aggrieved parents and relatives of the girl staging a protest demonstration in front of the school where Saravanan was working. Saravanan has been booked under Sec 306 of IPC (abetment to suicide) and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. (UNI)
