A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening when a bridge built over the Indrayani river in Pune’s Kundmala area collapsed, resulting in the death of two tourists and 38 others feared drowned.

The accident occurred in the Maval region of Pune rural district — a popular tourist destination especially during the monsoon season. According to sources, nearly 100 tourists were on the bridge at the time when it suddenly gave way due to the force of the swollen river waters.

Kundmala, located near Lonavala, sees a huge influx of visitors during the monsoons due to its scenic beauty. However, the region had been witnessing heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, especially for the ghat areas.

As soon as the incident was reported, local police, fire brigade, and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the spot. Rescue operations were launched immediately in the fast-flowing river, which has made the task extremely challenging.

Search is underway for those feared to have been swept away, and authorities are using boats and divers to locate the missing.
