A shocking incident was reported on Thursday from Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, where a man attempted to take his own life by jumping from one of the upper floors of the mosque. Thanks to the swift action of on-duty security personnel, the man’s life was saved. Saudi authorities have confirmed the incident, while the chief imam of the Grand Mosque has expressed deep regret over the episode.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the footage, the man can be seen attempting to jump over the railing of the mosque. However, a nearby security guard reacted quickly and managed to stop him from falling, preventing a major tragedy. The sudden incident caused panic among worshippers present at the site.
According to a statement shared by an official Emirati account, the guard immediately grabbed the man as he tried to jump. During the rescue attempt, the security officer sustained injuries, while the man suffered a fractured leg. The Haramain security forces said both the injured guard and the man were rushed to a hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Chief Imam expresses concern
As reported by Khaleej Times, the chief imam of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, later expressed sorrow over the incident. He urged pilgrims to respect the sanctity of the holy site and strictly follow the rules. Referring to the Quran, the imam stressed that the protection of human life is one of the core objectives of Islamic law and that life should never be wasted in such a manner.
