A tragic incident was reported from Gujarat where a first-year student of a medical college died allegedly after he was made to stand for three hours as part of a ragging by seniors.

The incident took place in GMERS Medical College and Hospital in Dharpur Patan.

The victim has been identified as Anil Methania, a resident of Jesda village in Surendranagar district.

He was among several first-year students who were made to stand for hours and introduce themselves to seniors as part of a ragging ritual.

Anil allegedly collapsed after standing for three hours and was rushed to hospital and doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The body has been sent for autopsy and its report is likely to provide more information on the cause of death.

His cousin Dharmendra said, “We were informed he had collapsed and has been hospitalised, but by the time we reached, he passed away. We demand a thorough investigation into this tragedy.”

Hardik Shah, the dean of the medical college, confirmed that the anti-ragging committee had launched an internal probe and informed law enforcement. “If ragging is proven, strict action will be taken against the culprits,” Shah assured.

Senior police officer KK Pandya said the student's father had filed a complaint and a case of accidental death had been registered.

"The autopsy has been conducted and the medical report has been asked to submit a report on the incident. Based on the findings, we will take further action," he said.

Asked about the ragging angle, the senior officer said, "We have asked for detailed information from the college on this point too."
