Varanasi: Nine youths have been arrested by the police for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old girl in different parts of Varanasi City here in Uttar Pradesh over a period of six days, a senior police officer said here on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Varuna Zone) Chandra Kant Meena said that a case was lodged against 23 persons of which nine have been arrested.
He said that a few more persons are suspected to be involved in the incident and efforts are being made to identify them.
Police sources said that the police have arrested Raj Vishwakarma (20), Danish Ali (20), Imran Ahmad (19), Shabbir Alam alias Sameer Ahmad (21), Ayush Dhusia (19), Sajid (19), Suhail Sheikh (20), Sohail Khan (20) and Anmol Gupta (28). "Six of the arrested accused were detained by the police on Sunday," they said.
Police sources said, "All the arrested accused were produced before the court late on Tuesday evening from where they were sent to jail. The victim's mother had filed a case against 12 named and 11 unidentified accused. Efforts are being made to arrest the remaining accused," they said.
Police sources said that the victim's mother has alleged that on March 29 while the girl was returning home from her friend's house, she met Raj Vishwakarma.
"It has been alleged that Raj took the victim to a cafe where he raped her overnight. The next day Sameer took the girl with him, sexually assaulted and left her in Nadesar locality," they said.
Police sources said that the girl's mother has alleged that over a period of six days the victim was raped by 23 youths.
"The mother claimed that the girl somehow managed to reach her home on April 4 and narrated the entire incident after which a case was lodged against 12 named and 11 unidentified persons," they said.
Police sources said that the victim's mother alleged that during this the girl was drugged by the accused on different occasions before assaulting her sexually.
