An egg donated by a poor man for the construction of a mosque in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir has helped raise Rs 2.26 lakh in an auction.
The heartwarming incident took place in Malpora village in Sopore, 55 kilometre from Srinagar, where the local mosque committee started collecting donations both in cash and in kind.
A poor man donated a freshly laid egg by his chicken for the mosque.
The mosque committee accepted the egg and like other donations in kind and it was put up for auction.
The humble donation turned out to be a major attraction for villagers. People bid on the egg for three days and after every auction, the buyer would return it for another auction to raise more money.
On the final day of the auction, a young businessman purchased the egg for Rs 70,000. The total amount raised by the repeated egg auction was around Rs 2.2 lakh.
A video clip showing the crowd celebrating the final sale with the mosque committee members dancing has gone viral in Kashmir.
"We have completed the auction of this egg and it has raised Rs 2.26 lakh rupees," said a member of the mosque committee.
