Luna 25: Russian lunar spacecraft crashes onto Moons surface

Russia's first moon mission in almost 50 years has failed, according to Russian space agency Roscosmos

Roskosmos said Luna-25 space craft has crashed into the moon after it spun into uncontrolled orbit

Earlier, Roscosmos said there has been an ‘abnormal situation’ during a manouver involving the probe

Roscosmos had originally cooperated with the European Space Agency on the lunar program

However, after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, ESA ended its work with Moscow

The probe had been due to touch down near the South Pole of Moon

Among its tasks was a search for water, with Russia aiming to establish a research base on the Moon by 2040

It was Russia's first mission to the moon since 1976
