'Newton' to compete with 91 films at Oscars

Mumbai: The Rajkummar Rao starrer 'Newton' will compete with 91 films in the Foreign Language Film category for the 90th Academy Awards.According to a statement by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, 'Newton' is among 92 films which have been submitted for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 90th Academy Awards.

Prominent among the films which will compete with 'Newton' in the Best foreign film category at the Oscars are Angelina Jolie’s “First They Killed My Father” from Cambodia, Michael Haneke’s “Happy End” from Austria, Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” from Chile, Robin Campillo’s “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” from France, Samuel Maoz’s “Foxtrot” from Israel, Joachim Trier’s “Thelma” from Norway, and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Loveless” from Russia.According to the statement by the Oscars academy, Haiti, Honduras, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mozambique, Senegal and Syria are first-time entrants in the category this year.

Among the other nominees in the category are Afghanistan's “A Letter to the President,” Albania's “Daybreak,” Algeria's “Road to Istanbul,” Argentina's “Zama,” Armenia's, “Yeva,” Australia's, “The Space Between,” Azerbaijan's “Pomegranate Orchard,” Bangladesh's “The Cage,” Belgium's “Racer and the Jailbird,” Bulgaria's “Glory,” Croatia's, “Quit Staring at My Plate,” Czech Republic's, “Ice Mother,” and Denmark's “You Disappear” .'Newton', a Hindi film set against the backdrop of elections in the world’s largest democracy, was last month chosen as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars 2018.

Directed by Amit V Masurkar, 'Newton' was chosen from among 26 titles from different languages by a 14-member jury appointed by the Film Federation of India (FFI).
Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on January 23, 2018.The awards ceremony will be held on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.Newton collected Rs 11.83 crore in its opening week facing competition from films like Bhoomi and Haseena Parkar.The movie has collected Rs 7.09 crore in its second week, taking its grand total to Rs 18.92 crore.(UNI)
