Mumbai: In a major development in the actor Saif Ali Khan attack probe, accused Bangladeshi national Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad's face has matched during tech-based recognition tests with that of the accused found in the CCTV footage at the actor's house, Mumbai police sources claimed on Friday.
The breakthrough in "positively identifying" the attacker was achieved through a face recognition test, the sources said.
According to the sources, CCTV footage from the crime scene was analysed, and the face of the individual seen in the video was matched against Shariful’s features. The results of the test confirmed a match, strengthening the case against him.
Police investigators claimed Shezad was the person responsible for the attack on Saif Ali Khan. Further probe is underway as authorities gather more evidence to build a solid case against the accused.
"After we obtain a positive report in this regard we will be able to prove our case more strongly before the court at the time of trial or on different stages," said a top officer of the Mumbai police, who was supervising the case.
Accused Shezad is presently in judicial custody and lodged in Arthur Road jail.
According to tech experts, the face recognition test is a biometric recognition technology based on facial features. It uses a camera to collect images or videos containing human faces and automatically detects and tracks identical human faces.
