Mumbai:Veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away here on Wednesday after suffering from years of age-related ailments.
He was 98.The yesteryear star was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital on June 30.
On Tuesday, his wife Saira Banu had assured his fans that his condition was stable. "Dilip Kumar Sahab's health is still stable. He is still in ICU, we want to take him home but we are waiting for doctors' approval as they know his medical condition as soon as doctors allow, will take him home. He will not be discharged today. Need prayers of his fans, he will be back soon,' her last tweet read.
Sources at the hospital confirmed the news of his demise to the media.Famous for his method acting, he was popularly known as the tragedy king of Bollywood and had worked in films like Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Gunga Jamuna, Ram Aur Shyam, Naya Daur, Madhumati, Kranti, Vidhaata, Shakti and Mashaal among several others
Prez, PM, HM condole Dilip Kumar's demise
President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep grief over the passing away of legendary actor Dilip Kumar.
President Kovind said the versatile actor summarised in himself a history of emerging India.
"The thespian’s charm transcended all boundaries, and he was loved across the subcontinent. With his demise, an era ends. Dilip Saab will live forever in the heart of India. Condolences to family and countless fans," Mr Kovind wrote on Twitter.
Mohammed Yusuf Khan, popularly known as Dilip Kumar, 91, passed away at Mumbai's Hinduja Hospital earlier in the morning after suffering from years of age-related ailments.
Prime Minister Modi said the actor will be remembered as a cinematic legend.
"He was blessed with unparalleled brilliance, due to which audiences across generations were enthralled. His passing away is a loss to our cultural world. Condolences to his family, friends and innumerable admirers. RIP,' he tweeted.
Union Home Minister too expressed similar sentiments over Kumar's demise. Mr Shah described his death as a loss to the Indian cinema. "Shri Dilip Kumar Ji was a veritable legend of the silver screen, in him, Indian Cinema has lost one of the greatest actors. He has entertained generations of cinema lovers with his incredible acting and iconic roles. My sincerest condolences to Dilip Ji’s family and followers," he said.
Considered as one of the greatest actors in the history of Hindi cinema, Kumar was facing multiple health-issues for the past few weeks. On July 5, Kumar's family shared an update on his Twitter handle, assuring that the actor was stable and improving, however, earlier today they announced his demise.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the death of film actor Dilip Kumar. He tweeted on Wednesday that the death of Dilip Kumarji, the father of Indian cinema, the acting emperor, the inspiration of innumerable artists, is an irreparable loss to the film world.
"Praying to God to grant the departed soul a place at his feet and strength to the bereaved family members to bear this unfathomable loss. Peace!'," Yogi said.
Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav also expressed his condolence saying that 'death cannot take him anywhere and the memory of his loved ones will not let him go anywhere... That's the rebellious style of 'Mughal-e-Azam'... of 'Salim'. Immortal character... you can't go anywhere Dilip sahab.'"
Bahujan Samaj Party National President Mayawati said, "The news of the demise of Dilip Kumar, a famous and well-known personality of the Indian film industry, is very sad.
"Humble tribute to Dilip Kumar, who left an indelible mark in the film industry with his performance. His films will always be memorable," she said.

Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the passing away of legendary actor Dilip Kumar who died in Hinduja hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The Governor in a message said that Dilip Kumar was a trendsetter in Indian cinema with different styles of acting and was an inspiration to generations of actors of Indian cinema.
Mr Harichandan said Dilip Kumar is regarded as one of the greatest actors that the country has ever produced with a career spanning over five decades.
He offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed grief and sorrow over the passing away of Dilip Kumar.
In a message, he said that Dilip Kumar was a doyen of Indian cinema who carved a special place for himself in Bollywood by immortalising the role of Salim in Mughal-e-Azam and scintillating performances in Naya Daur, Madhumati, Ganga Jamuna , Shakti and the like.
The passing away of the legend (born as Mohammed Yusuf Khan) is a void in the cultural field which cannot be filled, the Chief Minister said and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to his actress wife Saira Banu.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday mourned the demise of veteran actor Dilip Kumar, remarking that the legendary actor will forever remain in the hearts of his fans.
"Dilip Kumar dominated the film industry with his diverse roles and versatile acting. His career was one of the highlights of the Indian Cinema, and he will forever remain in the hearts of his fans," the CM said.
He recalled how Dilip Kumar enjoyed a close relationship with his father, late Bal Thackeray and both nourished a inseparable bond of arts.
Meanwhile, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said that the Dilip Kumar’s demise has shattered the ‘beacon of Indian Cinema’ and the country has lost a great artiste of the century.Similarly, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actor Dilip Kumar. We have lost a legend."
BJP’s Leader of Opposition (Assembly) Devendra Fadnavis remembered how “they grew up watching his films” and the patriotic roles enacted by the versatile actor in films like “Kranti” and “Karma” are unforgettable.
“He was a World Record holder for winning the maximum number of awards as an actor… I had the privilege to honour him with the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ at his home (in Dec. 2015). History of Indian Cinema will fondly remember him forever,” said Fadnavis.
State Samajwadi Party president Abu Asim Azmi said that the actor was “not only a great actor, but an excellent human being” who was always at the forefront in serving people in society.
