Jhansi: Railways on Thursday sent a senior police official to here to probe the alleged case of two nuns and two girls being forced to get off from a train at the Jhansi railway station over the suspicion of ‘forced religious conversion.’

On the orders of Inspector General of Police (IG) Railway, Superintendent of Police Railway Saumitra Yadav reached Jhansi and started a detailed investigation into the matter. As per sources, an order for strict action in this case may come by evening.

Notably, two nuns and two girls, who were headed towards Orissa’s Rourkela from Delhi were forced to get off the Utkal Express on the night of March 19 at the Jhansi Railway station. An organisation had informed the railway police that the two girls are being taken for forced religious conversion.

Upon receiving the information, the railway police and concerned officials interrogated them and checked the documents and released them as no evidence of religious conversion was found.

It has been alleged that there was no woman police personnel present during the time when the accused women were being questioned or when they alighted the train. The accused women informed the Kerala government and the Catholic Bishop Council about the whole incident after reaching the southern state.

Taking the matter into cognizance, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, apprising him about the whole incident and urging for an investigation. On the other hand, the Bishop Council also wrote a letter to the PMO expressing strong resentment over the matter.

Later, the Home Minister took up the matter during an electoral rally in West Bengal and assured the people of Kerala of an impartial probe and appropriate action. (UNI)
