Devotees observe Govardhan Puja to honor Lord Krishna’s divine act of lifting the Govardhan mountain to protect the people of Braj from Lord Indra’s wrath. Mythological Story Behind Annakut and Govardhan Puja

In the Dwapar Yuga, the people of Braj used to worship Lord Indra, the god of rain, and offer him Chhappan Bhog (56 types of food). Lord Krishna advised them to instead worship Govardhan Hill, which nurtured their lives by providing fertile land and shelters for their cattle.

Angered by this defiance, Indra sent torrential rains to punish the villagers. To protect them, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger for seven days, sheltering the people and animals beneath it.

When Lord Brahma informed Indra that Krishna was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Indra realized his mistake and asked for forgiveness. Lord Krishna then placed the mountain back and declared that Govardhan Puja and Annakut festival would be celebrated annually as a reminder of faith, humility, and devotion.
