The holy month of Sawan (Shravan) has begun, and with it comes the deeply revered tradition of Sawan Somvar Vrat (Monday fast), dedicated to Lord Shiva. Each Monday during this sacred month holds immense spiritual value. It is widely believed that those who observe this fast with full devotion receive the divine blessings of Mahadev and find fulfillment of their heartfelt wishes. But if you are observing the Sawan Monday fast for the very first time, there are certain essential rules and rituals you must know to ensure you receive its full spiritual benefits.

Sawan Somwar Vrat Rules

1. Vrat Sankalp (Resolution of the Fast): After bathing and wearing clean clothes, sit in front of Shivling. Mentally take a vow (sankalp) that you will observe the Sawan Somwar fast with full sincerity and follow all its rules.

2. Maintain Cleanliness: Both physical and mental purity are essential. Wear clean, modest clothes and keep the puja area tidy throughout the day. Avoid negative thoughts, arguments, and unnecessary speech.

3. Fasting Food Norms: Most devotees observe the fast as Nirjala (without water and food) or Phalahari (fruit-based). However, if you are unable to do Nirjala, you can eat light Phalahari food once during the day. Use only sendha namak (rock salt) and avoid regular salt.

4. What You Can Eat: Fruits, milk, curd, buttermilk, sabudana (sago), items made from singhada (water chestnut) flour, items made from kuttu (buckwheat) flour, sweet potatoes, makhana (fox nuts).

5. What You Must Avoid: Grains (wheat, rice, etc.), pulses and lentils, common salt, onion and garlic, non-vegetarian food and alcohol, tamasic foods.

6. Even while breaking the fast, do not consume grains or regular meals. Continue with Phalahar.
