The spiritual journey that begins in Krishna’s birthplace, Mathura, reaches completion in the divine towns of Vrindavan and Govardhan. Mathura—where Lord Krishna was born. Vrindavan—where He performed the Ras Leela. Govardhan—where He lifted the sacred hill on his little finger to protect the villagers from Indra’s wrath.
These three places hold extraordinary significance in Hinduism. Devotees believe that every stone and every particle of Govardhan Hill represents Radha and Krishna. That is why taking soil or stones from Govardhan home is considered inauspicious — almost equivalent to removing the deity from His own temple.
Pilgrims visit Govardhan to complete the 24-kos parikrama to seek relief from suffering and to invite blessings. The 26 km distance from Mathura to Govardhan can be easily covered by bus, taxi, or auto.
Why You Should Not Bring Govardhan Soil or Stones Home
Many people pick up stones or soil from Govardhan during the parikrama and take them home. But according to belief, this is extremely inauspicious.
It is said that doing so may anger Radha Rani and Lord Krishna, resulting in negative outcomes in life. The only way to counter this is by offering gold equal to the weight of the Govardhan stone — a tradition hardly anyone can follow.
Bringing soil from Vrindavan is considered auspicious; applying a tilak with it is believed to bring peace of mind and deepen one’s devotion to God. However, taking soil, stones, or dust from Govardhan is prohibited.
Mythological Legends Behind Govardhan’s Sacredness
1. The Curse of Sage Agastya
According to ancient scriptures, Govardhan Maharaj was the son of Guru Dronacharya. Once, Sage Agastya was taking him to Kashi, but Govardhan refused to go. Angered, the sage cursed him, saying he would slowly shrink over time — something devotees believe continues even today.
2. The Promise of Lord Hanuman
In the Treta Yuga, Hanuman was carrying Govardhan Hill to aid in the construction of the Ram Setu, but after the work was completed, he left the hill midway. He then promised that in the Dwapar Yuga, Govardhan would witness Lord Rama in the form of Krishna. This belief came true when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill, making it eternally divine.
Devotees believe Govardhan Hill is itself the embodiment of Krishna, and that every tree and every vine in the region is a manifestation of divine energy.
