Shradh Paksha 2025 holds great importance in Sanatan Dharma. This 15-day period is dedicated to honoring our departed ancestors and offering them Shraddha and Tarpan. It is believed that during these days, ancestors descend to earth in subtle form to accept the offerings made by their descendants. By following certain rules, one can receive blessings from ancestors and also get rid of Pitru Dosh.
In 2025, Shradh Paksha began on Sunday, September 7 (Purnima) and will end on Sunday, September 21 (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). Here are the key rules and practices to follow during this sacred period:
1. Avoid Tamasic Food
During Shradh Paksha, avoid consuming non-vegetarian and tamasic food items such as meat, fish, eggs, onion, and garlic. A pure satvik diet keeps the mind and body clean, which is essential for performing Shradh rituals.
2. Do Not Cut Hair or Nails
It is advised not to cut hair or nails during these 15 days. Shaving, grooming, or makeup-related activities should also be avoided. This discipline is considered a mark of respect toward one's ancestors.
3. Avoid New Beginnings and Purchases
Pitru Paksha is a time of remembrance and mourning, not for celebrations. Hence, auspicious activities like marriage, engagement, housewarming, or starting new work should be avoided. Buying new clothes, jewelry, or big household items is also not considered favorable.
4. Feed Brahmins and the Needy
Feeding Brahmins and the poor is regarded as the most important act of Shradh. On the tithi (death anniversary) of your ancestor, offer them a meal at home. If this is not possible, serve food to a needy person. Dishes like kheer, puri, and other favorites of your ancestors should be included.
5. Offer Food to Birds and Animals
It is believed that ancestors visit us in the form of crows, cows, and dogs. Hence, keep aside food for them on the day of Shradh. Feeding these beings is considered equivalent to offering food directly to ancestors.
6. Perform Tarpan and Pinddaan
Daily Tarpan should be performed by mixing black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass in water, facing the south direction. According to one's capacity, Pinddaan should also be carried out, as it grants peace and salvation to the ancestors.
7. The Importance of Donation
Charity holds special significance during Shradh Paksha. Donating essentials like food, clothes, footwares, blankets, and other items helps remove Pitru Dosh and brings the blessings of ancestors. It also ensures merit (punya) and satisfaction for departed souls.
