Seoul: South Korea's ruling Democratic Party's Chairman Song Young-gil was hit on Monday by a 70-year-old YouTuber in his head with a hammer during the campaigning for upcoming presidential elections here.
The attack happened when the leader was in Sinchon area for the presidential election due on Wednesday.
The assailant came up to him from behind and struck him on the head several times with a hammer wrapped in a black plastic bag, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Party's officials said the leader was rushed to a hospital, bleeding from his head, where he received stitches.
According to a witness, the man shouted at the scene that he opposes South Korea-US military exercises and cannot stand to leave behind such a world to the youth, Yonhap said.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in denounced the attack and termed it as "terror against democracy". (UNI)
