Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Economic Offences Wing of city police on Tuesday arrested a man who allegedly demanded Rs 2.5 crore on pretext of installing a special type of chip in EVM (electronic voting machine) for getting maximum votes for the party candidate.

In a written complaint filed by Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council Ambadas Danve with city police commissioner Manoj Lohia, he alleged that a person named Maroti Dhakne called on his mobile phone and demanded Rs 2.5 crore from him on promise of installing a special kind of chip in EVM to be used in fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election on May 13 for securing maximum votes for his party's nominee.

He asked for Rs one lakh as a token amount.

Considering seriousness of this matter, the city police chief immediately appointed a special team, which laid a trap at a restaurant in front of central bus station here.

The police team caught red-handed Dhakne while accepting the token money.

The accused was identified as Maroti Natha Dhakne (42), an Army constable posted at Udampur, Jammu, resident of Katewadi at Kharwandi Kasar in Pathardi tehsil of Ahmednagar district.

Further legal action is going on, he added.
