In Sanatan Dharma, ancestors hold a sacred place. Many people keep photos of their ancestors at home to honor them and seek their blessings. However, Vastu Shastra clearly states that placing these photos in the wrong location can bring negativity, stress, and even financial troubles. To maintain harmony and respect, it is important to know the correct rules. Here are the do's and don'ts you should follow when placing ancestors' photos in home.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Do Not Keep Ancestors' Photos in the Puja Room: One of the most common mistakes is placing ancestors' photos in the puja house. According to Vastu, the space for deities and ancestors is different. Only idols and pictures of gods should be kept in the puja room. Placing ancestors' photos here can create Dev Dosh (disharmony between deities and ancestors).

2. Avoid the Brahma Sthan, Stairs, and Store Room: The Brahma Sthan (the central part of the house) is considered highly sacred. Placing the photo of a deceased person here is inauspicious. Similarly, photos should not be kept under the stairs or in the store room, as this may lead to stress and financial instability for family members.

3. Do Not Place Them in the Bedroom or Kitchen: Keeping ancestors' photos in the bedroom is considered very inauspicious. It may disturb the peace of the home. Likewise, they should not be placed near the kitchen or bathroom, as these areas are not regarded as pure.

Rules for Placing Ancestors' Photos

1. South Direction is Best

According to Vastu Shastra, the south direction is the most auspicious place for ancestors' photos, as it is believed to be the direction of the Pitru. The photo should face north. Alternatively, you may also place the photo in the north, but in that case, the face should be towards the south. Doing this is said to attract the blessings of ancestors.

2. Place on a Stand, Not on the Wall

Another common mistake is hanging photos on the wall. Vastu suggests that ancestors' photos should never be hung. Instead, place them respectfully on a wooden stand, table, or cupboard to maintain dignity.

By following these simple Vastu rules for ancestors' photos, you can invite peace, prosperity, and harmony into your home while honoring your forefathers. During Shradh 2025, make sure to respect these traditions, as they not only strengthen spiritual connections but also ensure positive energy within the family.
