5 dead in Guwahati as rains trigger landslides in Assam

Guwahati: At least five people died in Assam capital Guwahati in the past 24 hours as Incessant rain triggered landslides in different areas of the city.

Continuous rains for the last three days have also led to floods in different districts of the state and severe waterlogging in Guwahati, forcing the state government to issue red alerts in 12 districts of the state.

Officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority confirmed the death of five persons in Guwahati in past 24 hours and said that at least 8 revenue circles in three districts have been affected by floods.

Apart from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Golaghat districts, three other districts have also witnessed floods which includes Kamrup, Kamrup metro and Cachar districts.

ASDMA officials said that NDRF and SDRF have been carrying evacuation of stranded people in different flood-affected areas.

The situation turned bad in Guwahati where several areas witnessed floods and landslides due to the incessant rains in the last 48 hours.

Some residents of Guwahati reportedly abandoned their houses on Friday as the water level increased and inundated their houses.

Hundreds of people are stranded in their houses in different locations in Guwahati after the localities are completely inundated.

The authorities have also disconnected electricity to different areas of the Guwahati following large- scale inundation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who reviewed the flood preparedness on Friday evening, said teams of NDRF, SDRF and DDRF have been stationed across Assam to tackle the evolving situation.

"We have been reviewing the situation for the last 3 days. Over 14,000MT of rice has been dispatched to provide relief in affected areas," Sarna said on his X handle.
