Thiruvananthapuram: Anthrax has been confirmed in wild boars at Athirappilly forest area in Thrissur district of Kerala, Health Minister Veena George has said.

Several wild pigs have been died due to Anthrax and the people who went to remove and bury the carcasses of dead pigs are being monitored, the Minister said.

The health department which issued a warning is taking immediate steps to prevent the spread of anthrax in animals with the support of the Animal Husbandry Department and the Forest Department.

As the presence of Anthrax bacteria was found in the carcasses of wild boars in hilly regions of Athirappilly forest area, people are requested not to be in contact with such places.

Anti-anthrax vaccine is being administered to domestic animals in view of the spread of the bacteria in the forest villages.

What is Anthrax?

Anthrax is a rare but serious illness caused by a spore-forming bacterium, Bacillus anthracis. If not treated in time, the disease can worsen and lead to death.

Symptoms of anthrax affecting the lungs include fever, chills, headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, and body aches. (UNI)
