Ayodhya: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 22-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her 17-year-old brother with an axe in Ayodhya's Pateranga area, officials said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Matoili Ka Purwa village while the parents were away from home.

According to police, the victim, Renu, was reportedly in frequent contact with a male friend over the phone, which her younger brother opposed. On Saturday evening, an argument broke out between the siblings, leading to the fatal attack.

“At the time of the incident, no other family members were at home,” said Inspector Shashikant Yadav. “The brother attacked Renu with an axe, causing her death on the spot.”

Their father, Chandrabhan Yadav, was in Mathura, and their mother had gone out to collect fodder. Police arrived at the scene after being informed by neighbours and sent the body for postmortem.

An investigation is ongoing.
