Bengal Govt observing Subhas Utsav, PM pays homage to Netaji

Kolkata: The 123rd birth anniversary of the freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is being celebrated as Subhas Utsav all over the state today. The festival is organised by the Youth Services Department. This great son of Bengal and India was born on January 23, 1897 in Cuttack.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid home to Deshnayak on the occasion.Talking to her tweeter handle, Ms Banerjee said, "Homage to Deshnayak Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary."

"May his spirit of patriotism inspire future generations," she added.The chief minister will officially inaugurate the festival from Darjeeling. It was in a house in Giddapahar, Kurseong, now turned into Netaji Museum, that Subhas Chandra Bose was interned by the British rulers for seven months in October 1936, and he again spent a few days here in October 1937.

Subhas Utsav is being celebrated in all the 342 blocks, 118 municipalities and six municipal corporations (including the 144 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation), along with in each of the State's district headquarters and by the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA).

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid rich tributes to freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary.

"India will always remain grateful to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose for his bravery and indelible contribution to resisting colonialism. He stood up for the progress and well-being of his fellow Indians," Prime Minister tweeted.

He also wrote: "On 23rd January 1897, Janakinath Bose wrote in his diary, "A son was born at midday." This son became a valorous freedom fighter and thinker who devoted his life towards one great cause- India's freedom. I refer to Netaji Bose, who we proudly remember on his Jayanti today".The posting from the Prime Minister had a photo copy of the diary note as well.(UNI)
