Agartala: The BJP Tripura state committee has demanded the arrest of the killers of a BJP activist on June 23 night near his house at Adarshapalli area of Badharghat of Agartala.
Seeking action against the increasing incidents of crime in the city over past one month, the party leaders sought attention of the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and alleged that the opposition CPI (M) mobilized their sympathizers in the police to create trouble in the city.
According to the state BJP party leaders, at least five murder cases, including two shoot out incidents occurred in the city in last one month while more than 10 cases of theft and robbery and 34 cases of other social crimes were reported in five police stations of Agartala, but the success of police was minimum.
"Almost every night incidents of theft close to city police stations are reported. Even in northern part of the city, the dwellers had to spend sleepless night to save their life and properties. Robbery in broad daylight has increased, which signifies the problem in the police functioning," they said.
The state BJP leaders alleged that the crimes were happening despite the tough stand of the government against drugs and crime as CPI(M) cadres were present not only in civil administration but also in police and other services.
"In the last 25 years CPI(M) has appointed its cadres in all the government services which is why criminal incidents are increasing," they accused.
A large number of police officers and staff have been found directly involved with criminal gangs and already six policemen were suspended in three months for their involvement in drug peddling racket, the party stated.
"We believe there is a conspiracy against BJP-IPFT government by the opposition where a section of policemen and officials of civil administration are playing a vital role. There is an attempt to show that the law and order situation deteriorated after new government came into power," the leaders pointed out.
"We want strong intervention of the state government to foil the conspiracy," the leaders asserted. The party stated that Biswajit Paul (35) was shot dead from point-blank range in front of his house by some local goons who asked him to come out of his house for a talk.
"The party believes police know the identity of the criminals but not doing enough to find them out. One of the suspected was arrested yesterday and a pistol was recovered near the spot but it appeared that the investigators were trying to hide something,"they accused.
However, DIG (Southern range) Arindam Nath said that in a swift and highly efficient action, the police within hours arrested one of the accused identified as Pranjit Bhowmik, a resident of the same area. The pistol along with five bullets used in killing of the youth had also been recovered from an abandoned place near the assailant's house
According to police sources, the arrested person claimed that the shooting incident was not intentional but an 'accident following mishandling of the pistol'. The Scooty along with a bag pack of the deceased were recovered from the spot which is very close to the house of the accused.(UNI)
