The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday apprised the Supreme Court that it will evaluate the Class 12 students based on performance in Class 10, Class 11 as well as Class 12, saying the results will be declared on or before July 31.
While 30 per cent weightage will be given to students' performance in Class 10 and 11, their class 12 performance will carry a weightage of 40 per cent, along with marks for practicals or internal assessment on an actual basis as uploaded by the Schools on CBSE Portal, the board said in its submission.
Senior counsel J K Das, on behalf of the ICSE, informed the apex court that it has taken into account the performance of students from the past six years and not three years like CBSE.
Prima facie agreeing the evaluation scheme of both the boards amid the Covid-19 pandemic, a special vacation bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari observed the need for a 'dispute resolution' in assessment schemes.
Pointing out in case students want correction of final result declared, the bench asked the clarification for declaration of results and when the timeline for optional exams would be declared.
When the counsel stressed physical examination, the court said, "we are not going to review the policy which has been presented before us. We will give a timeline to conduct a physical exam and then you can appear if you are so keen."
Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for the CBSE, informed the court that there may be a moderation committee to look into the difference in marking mechanism adopted by various schools to put all students as far as the awarding of final marks for Class 12 is concerned on a par.
The court said it will take up the matter for an Order on Monday, June 21.
On the last hearing, Supreme Court had granted two weeks to the CBSE and the ICSE to place on record an evaluation formula for Class 12 students. On June 1, the Centre had decided that CBSE Board exams would not be held this year in view of the virulent Covid-19 pandemic.
It was also decided in the meeting chaired by the Prime Minister that in case some students desire to take the exams, such an option would be provided to them by the CBSE as and when the situation becomes conducive.(UNI)
