Patna: BJP today asked Congress to support Triple Talaq bill in Rajya Sabha as it was time for the party to wash its sin committed long back by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in making constitutional amendment to nullify the benefits granted by Supreme Court to Muslim women in Shahbano case.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, while addressing a function organised here at his party office said that Triple Talaq bill was brought in Lok Sabha to end this social evil prevalent among Muslims since long and it was passed with support from Congress.

It was crystal clear that Congress after having supported the bill in Lok Sabha, changed its tack and started creating obstructions in smooth passes of the bill in Rajya Sabha, headded."The then Rajiv Gandhi had committed sin by making constitutional amendment on strength of its thumping majority in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to nullify the benefits given to Muslim women by Supreme Court in Shahbano case," Mr Modi said adding that Mr Rajiv Gandhi who was also then Congress president, had succumbed to pressure of hard liners and fundamentalists of Muslim community.

Deputy Chief Minister said that now Mr Rahul Gandhi was Congress president and it was time for the party to wash its sin committed long back by supporting Triple Talaque bill in Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had displayed rare courage to take bold step for eradication of the social evil of Triple Talaq in Muslim community but Congress was creating hurdle to appease a section of society for its vote bank, he added.(UNI)
