New Delhi: The number of deaths in violent clashes in northeast Delhi since Sunday over the new Citizenship law rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to sources.
About 130 civilians and 56 police personnel were injured in past 48 hours during the violence which erupted in northeast Delhi, following clashes between supporters and protesters of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
Clashes and stone pelting were reported in Chand Bagh area of northeast Delhi on Tuesday evening.
Late last night, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited the affected-areas and met with senior police officers. Mr Doval visited areas, including Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Gokulpuri Chowk to take stock of the law and order situation.
Groups of pro and anti-CAA protesters torched houses, shops and vehicles and hurled stones in the Chand Bagh and Bhajanpura.The police used teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
In view of violence, the CBSE announced the postponement of Class X and XII Board exam paper for February 26, Wednesday, in schools of violence-hit northeast Delhi.
Late on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced that schools in violence-hit northeast Delhi will remain close on Wednesday as a precautionary measure and internal school examinations stand cancelled.
In another development, senior IPS SN Srivastava was appointed as Special Commissioner (Law and Order) of Delhi Police with immediate effect.
Delhi violence: JKSA sets up helplines for Kashmiri students
Srinagar: J&K Students Association (JKSA), a body of Kashmiri students outside the valley, has set-up helplines and online platforms to address the issues of Kashmiri Students in Delhi in view of prevailing situation in the national capital.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, a spokesperson of the JKSA said the association has set up the platform to help students and address their issues in Delhi, where the violence has so far claimed 18 lives and injured over 150 during the past three days.
The JKSA has issued number of about 20 members and requested the students to contact them in case of any emergency.
He said the JKSA has reaffirmed the pledge to carry forward its mission and help in easing out the problems of the student community.
However, it has appealed to all the students to lodge their problems, grievances openly so that meaningful solution can be found. The student organisation has requested the students of Kashmir studying in National Capital to connect with the available helplines, where the students can report grievances, issues in campus or outside of their educational institutions.
However, spokesman requested Kashmiri Students in Delhi to be patient and keep calm. He said that we saw parents are making frantic calls to their children advising them to remain away from violence venues and mobs.
