Srinagar: Four militants were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Sunday, a police spokesman said.
Mobile internet service in Shopian has been suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
He said despite rain, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO in village Daramdora, Keegam in Shopian early this morning.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, the militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons.
Security forces immediately retaliated and in the initial exchange of fire, two militants were killed. Later, two more militants were killed, he said.
A large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered, he said, adding the identity of the slain militants was being ascertained.
People are advised not to venture in the encounter area until it is declared safe, he said.
Additional security forces and state police personnel have been deployed in the adjoining areas to prevent any demonstration. (
