GST Rate Cut Comes Into Effect From Today: Know How Consumers Can Report If Shopkeepers Charging Old Prices

The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates came into force today, September 22. From now on, only two GST slabs — 5% and 18% — will apply nationwide. This change is expected to make a wide range of products cheaper, including everyday items like paneer and ghee, as well as big-ticket purchases such as air conditioners and cars.

According to the central government, older stock that was priced under the previous GST system must now be sold at the revised lower prices. However, many shopkeepers are reportedly still charging customers at the old rates to pocket extra profit.

To curb this malpractice, the government has stepped up monitoring and also enabled consumers to take action. Shoppers can now lodge complaints against shopkeepers charging old prices through multiple official channels.

How can I complain if shopkeepers charge old GST rates?

If a shopkeeper is still charging old GST prices despite the new reduced rates, you can lodge a complaint through the following channels:

WhatsApp or SMS: Send your complaint to 8800001915
National Consumer Helpline: Call 1915
Toll-Free Number: Dial 1800-11-4000
Mobile Apps: Use the National Consumer Helpline App or the Umang App
Website: Visit consumerhelpline.gov.in

The Ministry of Food and Public Distribution has also added a separate category for GST-related grievances on the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) and the INGRAM portal, making it easier for citizens to report violations.
