New Delhi: A Hindu group on Tuesday gave a call for chanting 'Hanuman Chalisa' in the Qutub Minar complex, forcing heavy police deployment at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Around 30-40 members of the group tried to march to the archaeological site, but were stopped by the Delhi Police.

Around 30 to 40 members of the group started a march towards the Qutub Complex on Tuesday. They were stopped by the Delhi police, detained and taken away in buses.

Entry to the complex was later shut to stop the protesters from entering. Security was also beefed up.

The call by United Hindu Front came in the backdrop of right-wing groups demanding removal of idols from the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque inside the Qutab Minar complex, so that they can be worshiped.

The protesters carried banners demanding permission to worship the Hindu and Jain idols in the Complex. The agitators also carried posters, saying the Qutub Minar was actually 'Vishnu Stambh'.

The Qutub Minar is the world's tallest brick minaret, which stands 72.5 meters tall. According to the website of Delhi Tourism, it was built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, after the defeat of Delhi's last Hindu kingdom.

The Quwwat Ui Islam (Light of Islam) Mosque in the Qutab complex was constructed by Qutab-ud-din Aibak between 1193 and 1197. (UNI)
