Militant killed in ongoing operation in south Kashmir

Srinagar: An unidentified militant has been killed in an ongoing encounter in South Kashmir Awantipora sub-district on Sunday morning, police said.

They said the gunfight erupted at Baragam village of Awantipora when joint teams of forces launched a cordon and a search operation following an input about presence of militants.

"As the joint team approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter," a police officer said.

In a tweet police said an unidentified militant has been killed so far.

"#AwantiporaEncounterUpdate: 01 unidentified #terrorist killed. #Operation going on. Further details shall follow," a police tweet said.

This is the third gunfight in South Kashmir this month. In two earlier gunfights at Pulwama and Shopian districts five militants were killed. (UNI)
